Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) was formed by Ministry of Power in Government of India. The mission of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is to assist in developing policies and strategies within the overall framework of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 with the primary objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy. In 2010, the government has made it mandatory for certain items to have ratings and labels on its products which specify the performance of the product and help the customers in making right choices before buying such product. The rating given by the BEE indicates a company’s compliance level in BEE. A company or a product having a higher BEE level indicates the standard performance of the company in relation to competition.
A company mainly requires a BEE certificate to prove their BEE status in the market. The certificate is valid for a year, and it needs to be renewed every year based on the BEE implementation during the period. It helps the company in both regulatory and promotional activities. In regulatory it sets performance standards for appliances and designs labelling scheme for the same. The star rating on various appliances like AC, Frost Free (No-Frost) Refrigerator, Water Heaters, etc is mandatory required to have BEE rating. It helps in developing norms for energy consumption. In the promotional activity, it helps in creating promotional programs for energy efficiency and to develop testing facilities. It also helps in attracting the customers by achieving the highest level of BEE ratings The Government has made it imperative for a few notified items to have star ratings and labels which specify the energy saving performance of the product and help the customers in making the perfect selection before purchasing such product. The BEE registration is a two-step process.
The first step is to submit the application documents regarding the manufacturing product and availability of trademark documents to get the brand registered along with a security amount of INR 1,00,000 to BEE. Once the application is submitted, the manufacturing premises must submit the product sample and technical documents of the product to NABL accredited lab for testing and get the test report. In case of foreign manufacture Authorized Indian Representative will be submitting the documents on the behalf of plant. BEE will seek clarification and additional information, if required. On the approval of Brand Registration, it will activate the link for model registration. However, the step 1 takes about thirty to forty days for the completion of process including the testing.
The second step is for model registration, compile all the necessary documents including test reports and factory documents and make online payment for model registration. If BEE is satisfied, it will approve the application and grants the BEE registration to affix label on the product.
